Letter #7 (July 28, 2010, 2052h)

Lauren,

So, hopefully by now you have received about 6 letters. I am sorry that I haven't been able to call you yet this week. We had a few people mess up, so we didn't earn out phone call. I am praying every day that we will earn it this week. I've been dying to talk to you!

But seriously though, I make it a point to pray every chance I get here. Always before any meal, and when waking up and falling asleep. Being here has really brought me closer to God.

In case you couldn't tell, I've been trying to write you every night. So far, it's been tough with the short nights. They're starting to come into the dorms at night and check our "night displays" and wake us when they're wrong. I wish you could see just how this place functioned. It's terrifying, yet amazing at the same time.

A Baby Flight came in just yesterday, and it brought back all those memories. I still remember lights out on the first night: The last thing Ssgt. Ramirez said to us before turning the lights out was "Welcome to the United States Air Force. Your "butt" belongs to the U.S. Government now." It absolutely terrified me. I also got to watch that baby flight go through their first lunch. I am quite sure that every T.I. from the 322 Training Squadron was there to pick them apart.

What you heard about Basic was right: nothing you do here will ever be right. After 8 weeks it's just "Not quite as crappy as before," never "good job." You've just got to learn to take everything with a grain of salt. You live life here one meal at a time, and when the day is over, well, you're just that much closer to graduation.

But now I'm off to sleep, another 3+ mile run day tomorrow morning, so goodnight!

Bailey
